St. Michael’s Health Group (SMHG) has been providing compassionate care and safe accommodation for over 40 years. We provide wellness-focused holistic care and offer several levels of accommodation in multiple facilities and a variety of programs in Edmonton and the surrounding area. WHO WE SERVE:

St. Michael’s Health Group operates a Long-Term Care facility located in north Edmonton providing round-the-clock specialized care for individuals who require the highest level of care. We also operate three fully compliant supportive living residences offering an affordable and exceptional standard of living and quality of life. Our Supportive Living homes are located in Edmonton, Spruce Grove (2 sites), and Vegreville, Alberta serving primarily seniors. Our communities offer a full range of care and services to residents from 24-hour support to independent living and can adjust services as needs change over time. Along with the care services, all of St. Michael’s communities provide social and recreational activities in a comfortable setting.  In February 2023, St. Michael’s assumed a management contract to operate four (4) Seniors affordable apartments in the City of Edmonton.  St. Michael’s also operates a social enterprise division that includes Mobile X-Ray services, a Family Health Centre, a Day Support Program, hall rental and catering operation and Baba’s Own Ukrainian Foods.  All proceeds generated from our social enterprise go back into quality-of-life programs for the residents we serve.

OBJECTIVE

We are looking for a Vice-President, Finance and IT who will have oversite of the day-today accounting operations and will lead the financial planning of our organization. You could be the successful candidate if you have the qualifications and personality traits we are looking for. This position will be part of the Executive Leadership team at St. Michael’s and will work closely with the President and CEO on the overall financial and business functions of the organization.

Reporting to and working with the President and CEO the Vice-President, Finance and IT is responsible for the execution of financial priorities determined by the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.  The Vice President, Finance and IT ensures that the financial obligations of St. Michael’s Health Group are met, reports financial results to the Board of Directors, and ensures that the financial reports are in compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for Not-For-Profit organizations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily Operations: 

  • Manage and direct a newly appointed Controller.
  • Responsible for day-to-day financial operations (receivables/ payables, etc.)
  • Month-end reporting for CEO and Board Finance Chair.
  • Oversee year-end auditing with our external auditor.
  • Budgeting, analyzing, and forecasting.
  • Understands the organizations’ internal processes and controls and develops operational efficiencies.
  • Monitors and analyses reports regarding SMHG operations, cost of materials and labour, computation of daily costs, inventories of equipment and supplies, develops recommendations for improvement and cost reduction.
  • Maintains close liaison with financial institutions aligned with St. Michael’s Strategic Plan.
  • Final review and approval for government Firms Reporting. Alberta Health Services & Alberta Seniors, Community and Social Services.
  • Cashflow Management for the Organization.
  • Create and promote Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
  • Problem solver specific to IT issues related to day-to-day operations.
  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of 5 employees.
  • Other duties as requested by the President and CEO.

Management Responsibilities:

  • A member of the SMHG Executive Management Team.
  • Currently this position has 5 direct reports. Access to contract staff as needed.
  • Set team goals to promote individual growth and development as well as achievement of organizational strategic objectives.
  • Analyze member insights, industry trends, market analysis, and marketing best practices to build successful strategies.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor metrics, variance reporting, KPI tracking, and monthly/quarterly reporting.
  • No direct reporting to the Board of Directors but will attend Board meetings when requested by the President and CEO.
  • Is the Staff Representative (Secretary) on the Board’s Finance, Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.
  • Primary contact for SMHG with Alberta Health Services and AB Seniors, Community and Social Services Contract and Procurement financial Leads.
  • Represents SMHG on various industry association committees.
  • Develops and manages a central repository for all corporate contracts (supplier, government, legal, etc.).
  • Participates in Grant submissions and provides financial requirements for applications.
  • Problem solver specific to Financial issues related to day-to-day operations, banking, investing and financing.
  • Tracks and acts accordingly on contract due dates and renewals. Oversees and initiates RFP’s for contracted services.
  • Manages and monitors risk within the organization.
  • Acts as the main contact with Insurance Companies, negotiates agreements, works with adjusters, and ensures SMHG has adequate coverage.
  • Main contact with our Corporate Lawyer – ensures all legal reporting and annual returns are completed.
  • Deals directly with our lawyer on matters relating to business operations, excluding Labour Relations activities.
  • Is the primary contact with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) specifically to charitable donations and reporting.
  • Develop key financial messaging and ensure their consistent application throughout the organization’s programs and initiatives
  • Strategic Planning and strong Time Management skills.
  • Oversees all Mortgages and Loan Renewals.
  • Ability to develop proper modeling and forecasting for strategic planning and responsible decision making.
  • Experience in dealing with GST.
  • Advanced knowledge of banking, brokerage and commerce is an asset.
  • Development and oversight of a facilities capital plan, forecasting an infrastructure strategy.
  • Review and approves Capital Grant Applications.
  • Other duties as requested by the President and CEO.

Information Technology:

  • Main contact for IT inquiries and contract services.
  • Work with 3rd Party providers on daily IT services for SMHG.
  • IT Capital Planning Strategy for SMHG, including hardware, systems, and software.
  • Problem solver specific to IT issues related to day-to-day operations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:       CPA designation

Experience:     Proven experience in a Senior/Executive role 7+ years

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Understands government funding programs, physician billings, reporting etc.
  • Overseeing company compliance with various regulations and legislation
  • Government Relations Experience
  • Understands Canada Revenue Agency policies relating to Charitable Donations.
  • Proficiency in interpreting contacts and ability to negotiate terms
  • Understanding of CMHC financing, considered an asset
  • Proven erience delivering or exceeding results
  • Proven experience successfully inspiring and leading teams
  • Demonstratable experience in data analytics and tools
  • Proven ability to work with cross functional teams and ability to maintain strong network of industry partners and suppliers
  • Solid computer skills in MS Office, Excel, Sage, Yardi, Adobe, PPT, CRM, and web analytics and Google.
