St. Michael’s Health Group strives to ensure our seniors have safe accommodations and access to caring and helpful staff.

We offer living options in well-maintained, comfortable, secure apartments. We have a variety of studio and one-bedroom suites to choose from and a limited number of two-bedroom suites are available in some of our buildings.

In Edmonton, our apartments are rent-geared-to-income and offer independent living to seniors. These subsidized apartments each contain independent cooking and bathroom facilities.

In Spruce Grove, our apartments are moderately priced, spacious rental units, ideal for the independent resident.

Our self-contained units provide community-minded, safe accommodations – making all of our locations an ideal place to call home.

Learn More About Our Seniors' Self-Contained Housing in Edmonton

Quality and affordable housing is the foundation of healthy communities. The seniors’ self-contained program offers subsidized rental housing to seniors with affordability concerns. Applicants whose income falls below local income thresholds are eligible to apply. In order to be eligible for the seniors’ self-contained apartments, you must be at least 65 years of age and be able to live independently or with a self-arranged personal care services assistance. A tenant’s rent, which includes heat, water, and sewer expenses, is based on 30% of a household’s adjusted income. Rent does not include electricity, phone, and any additional services such as parking and cable TV.

SMHG Seniors’ Self-Contained Housing Fees

Rent in seniors’ self-contained apartments is based on a rent-geared-to-income (RGI) formula. This means rent is based on a percentage of the tenant’s adjusted income. In the case of a couple or two persons sharing a seniors’ self-contained apartment, the rent is based on the combined incomes of both. Rent is calculated at 30% of income as shown on line 15000 of the tenant’s previous year’s tax assessment. Eligible applicants must fall below the income threshold, which is set annually by the Government of Alberta.

SMHG Seniors’ Self-Contained Housing Eligibility

  • The program is for seniors whose income is not sufficient to rent market rate accommodation and are functionally independent (with and without community-based services).
  • Is based on a point-scoring system set by the Government of Alberta.
  • Eligibility is determined after completion of an Application for Accommodation, a Medical Information Form, and a personal interview.
  • Placement on an eligibility list is determined by need rather than date of application.
